Programs for Adults:
- Parents in Action: This program consists of a series of workshops where parents learn how to keep track of the educational progress of their children, support their academic success, communicate with school personnel, learn what resources are available to their children and advocate on behalf of their children. The program is being offered in partnership with the Wallingford Public Schools and some of the workshops are being prepared and conducted by school personnel.
This Program is funded by the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford.
- English as a Second Language: We offer three weekly classes provided by Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven. As they progress, students gain confidence at work and at all their other daily activities. It is our belief that no other skill can provide more life benefit to Hispanic residents. Currently, 8-12 are enrolled in these classes.
- Circle Time: An English conversation class presented in conjunction with WE CARE, this weekly group activity provides participants with an opportunity to polish their newly acquired English skills. Approximately 15 people are presently enrolled.
- Teach Choate: Student volunteers from Choate Rosemary Hall School teach ESL classes at the Wallingford Public Library weekly. Eight students are presently participating in this program.
- Financial Literacy: Due to commence shortly, personnel from one of our supporting local financial institutions will be teaching adults about successfully navigating the banking system, creating a household budget, comparing mortgage programs and making application for one as well as dealing with other family finance issues.
- Computer Instruction: SCOW has a computer lab donated by the ATT Foundation, enabling us to offer basic and intermediate computer skills to adults. Participants learn keyboarding, of course, but also how to monitor their children’s use of the Internet, navigation of the internet to conduct online job searches, as well as improving their chances of advancement at work.
